S5E22 - “The Internet Is Forever”

The episode opens to ominous music at night; we see shots of a house with a security system and get some images of what the camera picks up. Shit gets heavy when a single person enters wearing a ski mask. They clearly do not belong in the house. They walk upstairs to one of the bedrooms and ominously open the door. There is someone asleep! The unsub approaches the bed, we see the woman asleep, and then we cut.

JJ is presenting information to the team – we learn that the sleeping woman is Doris Archer, the third woman to go missing in Boise, Idaho, that year. The other two were Paula Renmar and Samantha Rush, who went missing two months apart. At this point, Reid finally appears and he has changed his hair! Hotch asks, "what, did you join a boy band?" He earnestly responds "no", and the team moves past it.

We learn that all three of these women were in their late 20s - early 30s, all single, however, two were in committed relationships. I'm assuming this means they lived alone. They were in normal suburban houses, which gave the unsub privacy. Reid mentions that the differences between all three are more striking than the similarities; all three had different hair colors, body shapes, etc.

The team has been invited to help because they have no idea what the MO is. The abduction sites were pristine; no DNA evidence or anything. Additionally, there is no evidence of break-ins or a struggle. And lastly, the victims were not reported missing until 2-3 days after they were abducted.

Because of all of these variables, JJ asked Garcia to look into the three women, and she was able to easily see how the unsub is doing it. They are all extremely active on Facebook, Twitter, etc. She also shares that the last post each one of them made was saying that they were going on vacation - GUYS DONT DO THIS. However, looking at the time stamps of each one, it looks like these were all posted the morning after they went missing. Uh oh. The unsub posted them.

So basically, this unsub friends the women, tracks them down because all three of them overshare on the social media sites, and then hacks into their accounts. And he is obsessive enough to remove all forensic details of him being there. He is also patient enough to wait 2 months before abductions.

Hotch says they need to assume each of these women are already dead, however, the question is what does he do with them for those three days he has them.

And guys. Unsubs be streaming. We get a shot of the unsub watching surveillance footage of a lady sleeping on his three monitors.

On the BAU jet, Morgan suggests they try to use social media to find the unsub, since that is how he was finding the victims. However, JJ shares that the detective working on the case already tried that and everyone checked out. Goobs goes on about how social networking sites are surprisingly insecure and then talks about Facebook being bad. Rossi asks for someone to explain the appeal of these sites. They talked about wanting to believe there is an audience watching us.

Hotch is like, okay, but none of this explains how he got in the house. We learn that Doris had a security system, and a code was entered at like 1 am, so the unsub must've known the code somehow. He also must have someone figured out how to handle the dog, because her german Shephard also went missing the night she did.

Morgan suggests that he must have somehow been in and out of the house before the night she went missing; perhaps a repairman, or dog-walker. Someone you don't assume to be a threat. JJ is like, yeah, the detective also looked into that; "no one even came close to being a killer" – JJ what the fuck does that mean?

In Boise, Idaho, the team meets Detective Fordham. It looks like he has brought in a ton of friends f the victims. Rossi starts talking to a lady who is presumably Paula's mother? She says that there was no one new in Paula's life. However, she says she doesn't even know how social media websites work.

We also learn that Samantha had over 1000 friends, because she worked in real estate and it was a good way to keep connected. The girl that Reid is talking to mentions email, and we learn that Reid doesn't have a fucking email. UM?? I feel like that is a requirement to be fucking employed?? So she explains emails to him.

Next, JJ talks to Doris's boyfriend; asking him if he knows someone who would know the code to her home. He also learns that Bruno, the dog, was a guard dog. She shows him photos of the home, and asks if he sees anything different/out out of the ordinary. He notices that the photographs on her shelf have been changed/rearranged.

Morgan and Prentis, who are in the home, investigate these photographs, and Morgan sees that there is residue behind the photographs, and it looks as if he may have tried to hang something on the wall. Prentis, who is on the landing at the top of the stairs also finds similar residue. He was most likely trying to hang a camera or something, because from there he would have an unobstructed view of the second floor and the stairs.

And now, unsubs be streaming. We see the unsub watching a new victim; through cameras and social media. He watches her in the shower.

Prentis and Morgan show Hotch the cameras and talk about how they work. Reid also wonders what he is doing with the footage, because sexual release etc etc., and the team is like, wait you are right though, because voyerism and shit. So what is he actually getting out of the watching, etc.

Reid also shares that he is going to take a photo of Doris, because at first they had agreed there was no facial similarities between all of the victims, however, now Reid is not so sure of that.

Garcia also shares that it looks like one of the videos he took has been uploaded online, however because of fancy computer stuff, she is not able to track his location. Proxy and stuff. Proxy servers. Etc. however, she is tracing him back to Boise, and yep, she was able ot find the stream of him entering Doris's house. It looks like he definitely knows the house, and he knows the dog, because the dog is not threatened by him at all. He looks straight into one of the cameras, and it looks like the camera is attached to him, it is his POV. we see Doris wake up, and he strangles her. It is actually very disturbing. He is also very tender with her.

It turns out he was live streaming; people were commenting. And he has fans. So how does he have access to the women's homes? Work? But none of the IT, internet, tech,e tc people are him. Additionally, why does he take the bodies? That is kind of risky.

Then Garcia calls back with some good and bad news. She was able to find the network, however, he is using the victim's own networks. So he must be following around for like a week or so before he actually joins. Secondly, he is probably going to use the same kind of tech/hacking signature, so she should be able to identify him if he does it again.

Reid comes in, and he realizes what connects the victims. He talks about face symmetry, and it is kind of ridiculous. And all three victims = the left eye is slightly lower than the right eye on all the victims, the forehead is the same, and they have narrow noses. So consciously or subconsciously, he sees this face and has the urge to destroy it. So maybe these bodies relate to him somehow. They talk about the narcissus myth, and it gets ridiculous again.

Next, we see a woman taking a photograph of her scone and posting it online. And the unsub, not far away from her, watches her post.

Now the BAU gives the profile.

  • This unsub craves immortality

  • He recognizes his face on theirs, and he kills them as a way of saying 'this is what I look like".

  • We think this also informs his compulsion to take the bodies with him to a secondary location, where they believe he preserves them, so every time he looks at them he sees his own ego reflected

  • Fortunately for us, this means they have a good idea of what he looks like. Based on the shape of the victims' faces, [we] have a rough composite sketch

  • This unsub is an expert with computers and home networks; so look into criminal records of men with extensive computer training

  • Look into electronic stores, computer distributors, IT departments where the women worked

  • We overuse the term "narcissistic" in our culture, but we're going back to the psychological definition. Every aspect of this man's life has been constructed around an inflated sense of self.

  • Unsubs like this are particularly vulnerable to what's called narcissistic injury; if his self worth is attacked or damaged, he will lash out.

  • So if you find this unsub, do not challenge him publicly; say you just want to talk to him, see if he knows anything about the brilliant mastermind who's stalking these women. Under no circumstances should you denigrate him. We need to talk up his exploits as if we respected him.

Now we see the unsub hacking into networks, etc. the sound effects are really choice. He watches the news stream of JJ showing everyone the composite sketch of the unsub. The detective shares that no one should be posting on social media, which, again, is just kind of funny now. The media asks how they got the composite sketch, given the fact that there were no eye witnesses. Next, another reporter asks about the rumor of the unsub resembling the victims – how to do they know about this? They seem shocked at these questions.

JJ tells Hotch that someone leaked their profile. So, it is likely the unsub has seen the profile.

While on the phone with Hotch, Garcia sees that the unsub is going live. He is pissed and moving fast. He is approaching a house. He is in the house; the MO has changed; she is awake and in the house

She is fighting him off as he strangles her, and Garcia is trying to tug the viewers. However, no one is fast enough, and he killed her. I feel so bad for Garcia.

At the new victim's home, Emily and morgan try to figure out what changed with this place. They move a table and see that the cable that is connecting her computer to the wifi is not DSL, which is what she had, but fiber optic. So he fucked up! So maybe he is a door salesman who is offering to upgrade faster internet. Hehehehe. So that’s how he does it.

Emily and some cops and other members of the team go and apprehend several different guys who watched the video.

Reid and JJ talk to a lady who works for the company, and she gives them information on Mac Jones, who was being shady while working for the company. He has since been fired, and while looking him up, Garcia sees that his information had been stolen, so the unsub was impersonating him. But only for two weeks.

However, Garcia is able to find the guy who was impersonating Jones. His name is Robert Johnson, he was arrested for possession of torture videos, spent time in a halfway house before he disappeared. And Garcia found a blog of his online. Garcia also says she should be able to find his Hacker Handle, and that is how she wil find him.

Next, Morgan is talking to one of the guys who watched the video. We learn that they found a lot of stuff on this guy's computer. Finally, he cracks and asks for a deal; he shares that before "this guy" lets you into his club, he sends over the illegal stuff, because he wants to know that his viewers are risking as much as he is. Mutually assured destruction. Watcher 89 is the only name they got.

Apparently, he also sent out a message that said tonight would be the best one yet.

Rossi talks to the old man, and what is interesting is that they never found anything on this guys computer. Whereas, everyone else did. He keeps denying he doesn't know anything about any video, everyone went to bed early, his grandkids were over. Next, Rossi shows him a photo of the unsub and asks if he recognizes him. He says yes, he came into his store a while back, and he had complimented his website, which his son designed for him. But he does not know his name.

Rossi says he doesn't believe this man fits the profile. Additionally, his website is not sophisticated at all.

Garcia looks online, and they are able to narrow down a list of potential victims. They enter the home of Lucy Masters, whom they believe will be the next target, however, she does not seem to be home. While in the house, the tv turns on by itself, and there is a video of her being tied up and tortured. They realize the unsub is recording them and her.

However, Garcia is not able to track/locate where he is. BUT, Rossi recognizes where they are; a walk-in freezer, and that is where the old man is a part of this.

I think Rossi goes a little too hard on this old man because he may not have known what he was doing??

Now we see all the bodies of the other victims hanging in this freezer, and the unsub approaches her and begins strangling her. And that is when Garcia cuts his connection. He loses all of his viewers! He goes back to strangling her, but the bau is hot on his trail and can save the day! Next, Austin Chapman is arrested for accessory to murder, and an article is written about it.
